Democrats: Please demand that Debbie Schultz resign
For those who haven’t followed the scandal with Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), I’d like to bring you up to date with a fictional conversation taking place at a cocktail party. Our characters are David and Democratic Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz. We go now to the conversation, already in progress.
DAVID: It’s nice to meet you Debbie. What do you do?
DEBBIE: Oh me? I’m the co-chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Red-to-Blue program.
DAVID: Red-to-Blue? So you help Democrats get elected to the House?
DEBBIE: That’s right. It’s a program of that offers financial, communications, and strategic support to Democratic candidates.
DAVID: That’s cool. Hey, I’m from Miami. Who are you endorsing to run against Republican Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Lincoln Diaz-Balart and his brother, Mario Diaz-Balart?
DEBBIE: No one.
DAVID: No one? There aren’t any qualified Democrats running?
DEBBIE: Oh no, it’s nothing like that. There are three Democratic candidates running that I think are strong (Annette Taddeo, Joe Garcia, and Raul Martinez). But I’m friends with the Republicans in office, so I don’t want to support their opponents.
DAVID: But you co-chair this Red-to-Blue program? Doesn’t that upset some Democrats?
DEBBIE: Oh my god, yes. Those internet bloggers are so frustrating!
Yes, the above conversation is fictional, but if you follow the story, it’s an accurate summary of the situation. (I highly recommend this post from DailyKos summarizing things.)
Take Action!
In the above DailyKos post, DavidNYC urges Democrats to send a polite email urging Debbie Schultz to endorse the Democratic candidates or resign from her position with the Red-to-Blue Program. He emphasizes it should be polite to avoid giving her excuses to attack the messengers. If you have the time, writing an email in your own words explaining why you feel the co-chair of the Red-to-Blue program should endorse the Miami Democratic candidates or step down, please do so! But if you’re in a rush, here’s a form letter you can use or edit:
To Whom It May Concern:
Debbie Schultz’s failure to endorse the Democratic candidates in Florida is inexcusable. At a minimum, being the co-chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Red-to-Blue program means offering an endorsement of the Democratic candidates when asked. Annette Taddeo, Joe Garcia, and Raul Martinez deserve a Democratic party that is prepared to support Democratic candidates over Republicans. As a concerned citizen, I urge Representative Debbie Schultz to do her job and endorse the Democratic candidates or resign.
