Morse Code for Reagan

Yesterday, McCain spoke in Memphis to mark the 40th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His speech was met with boos and heckling, the result of his repeatedly opposing the creation of a MLK holiday. He explains this as the result of his having been a POW at the time King was killed:

“They never gave us any meaningful news,” McCain said. “They told us the day that Martin Luther King was shot, they told us the day that Bobby Kennedy was shot, but they never bothered to tell us about the moon shot. So it was certainly selected news.”

Putting aside that he voted against financing for the holiday as recently as 1994, there’s an interesting contrast between his “I never really heard about Dr. King while a POW” and statements he’s made about Ronald Reagan:

“I stand for the principles and policies that first attracted me to the Republican Party when I heard, in whispered conversations and tap codes, about the then governor of California, who stood by me and my comrades….”

So we’re to believe prisoners were tapping morse code about California Governor Ronald Reagan, but not Dr. King. Kagro X (at DailyKos) had a nice spoof on this:

Here’s a translation:

“Hey McCain, if I ever get out of here, I’m going to marry my girl.”

“Well, if i ever get out of here, I’m going to lower taxes on hard working Americans, just like Ronald Reagan.”

“Uh, ok.”

Nobody I know will deny McCain’s suffering and service while he was in Vietnam but I find myself out of patience with hearing him talk about it.

I think using the experience (over and over and over again) for political advantage cheapens it, not just for him but for all the other men who suffered similarly.
